Icloud Photo Library Can Only Be Used With One Library at a Time
Sync with iCloud Using Photos
While Photos works fine as a standalone epitome library, it tin can also connect with Apple'southward online service, iCloud. With the new iCloud Photo Library feature, all your devices can view items stored in a single online library—and add new items, besides. iCloud syncing will work but with a single library on your Mac, which Apple tree refers to as the System Photograph Library. By default, in Photos' iCloud preferences, the Download Originals to This Mac option is turned on, which means every photo you see in your Photos library resides on your Mac's drive.
But if you change that setting to Optimize Mac Storage ③, Photos no longer feels the need to store all your files locally. If you lot attempt to edit (or view at a large size) an image that isn't on your Mac, Photos downloads the epitome from iCloud and and then presents it to you. Photos may delete images from your drive to save space, confident that the master files are in the cloud.

Bargain with Missing Data
When you lot're using iCloud Photograph Library on more than one Mac, photos, folders, albums, and keywords sync between your Macs. All the same, projects don't sync, nor keyword shortcuts, or unused keywords. Photos identified with Faces will retain that information—so yous can search on it—but the Faces identification database itself doesn't sync. (Yeah, that'due south weird.)
Understand Sync Relationships
Using iCloud Photo Library to manage photos requires a mental shift. Yous're no longer using individual devices, merely a single shared library.
This has major ramifications. If you lot edit an paradigm on one device, those edits will propagate (rapidly) to all the other devices. If you delete an image in one place, it will be deleted everywhere. Don't delete an image on your iPhone assuming it'll remain on your Mac, because information technology won't.
Fortunately, Apple has built in a safety zone. Deleted files spend 30 days in an iCloud holding bin before existence permanently deleted. To display this belongings bin, choose File > Bear witness Recently Deleted ④.
④ You can recover (or permanently delete) items from the Recently Deleted anthology, which also displays how many days each item has left before it's automatically removed.
