Definition

Polygon in AutoCAD is closed 2D polyline consisting of three or more segments. A regular polygon is polygon in which all sides and angles are equal.

Tool

Polygon tool builds regular polygon either on end points of one side, or on center point and radius of inscribed or circumscribed circle.

Command AutoCAD Polygon

Polygon command is responsible for creating regular polygon in program.

You can call this command in following ways (start building polygon in AutoCAD):

• you can build polygon in AutoCAD from menu bar, item Drawing - line Polygon;
• You can draw it from tool ribbon on Home tab - in Drawing group Polygon button;
• You can draw polygon in AutoCAD from classic toolbar Drawing Polygon button;
• or enter command name in command line polygon.

Construction of polygon inscribed in circle

As already noted, polygon inscribed in AutoCAD in circle is defined by center point and distance from center to any of vertices. Therefore, radius of circumcircle is distance from center of polygon to one of its vertices.

Call command Polygon. At command prompt appears:

Number of parties <4>:

In response to this, you must enter number of sides that polygon should have in AutoCAD (from 3 to 1024). Enter value 5. Press "Enter". following query appears:

Specify center of polygon:

Set center of polygon in AutoCAD with mouse click. system will display query:

Set placement option [Inscribed into circle / Described around circle] B:

Select option "inscribed in circle." preview of AutoCAD polygon is displayed, which is attached to line extending from specified center to pointer. Its size will change along with changing position of pointer. command prompt will prompt:

Circle radius:

The radius of circle can be set by entering value in command line or by clicking mouse, specifying point in drawing. Enter value of 20 mm in command line and press "Enter". regular pentagon (polygon) in AutoCAD with radius of circumcircle of 20 mm is constructed.

How to draw polygon in program described around circle

The AutoCAD polygon described around circle is defined by center point and distance from center to midpoint of one of its sides. Consequently, radius of inscribed circle is distance from center of polygon to midpoint of one of its sides.

Call command Polygon. system will display query:

Number of parties <5 - previous value>:

We agree with default value, press "Enter". following query appears:

Specify center of polygon:

Specify center of polygon in AutoCAD. prompt appears on command line:

Set placement option [Inscribed into circle / Described around circle] <В>:

Select option "Described around circle" command MN-Angle. preview of AutoCAD polygon is displayed, which is attached to line extending from given center to pointer corresponding to middle of one of sides of polygon. size of polygon in AutoCAD will change along with change in position of pointer. command prompt will prompt:

Circle radius:

We repeat input of coordinates and set radius of circumscribed circle by specifying relative polar coordinates. Let's enter into command line following value @ 20 0, which means:

• "@" - coordinates are read from center point of AutoCAD polygon;
• "20" - distance from center point, i.e. radius of inscribed circle;
• "<" designation of polarity of coordinates - ability to bind to specific angle;
• "0" -angle value, i.e. 0 degrees.

A regular polygon in AutoCAD with 20 mm inscribed circle radius is built.

Board

By specifying radius of inscribed or circumscribed circle in command line by entering radius value, polygon in AutoCAD is automatically aligned so that its bottom side is parallel to X axis of current UCS. If you specify radius with mouse (using different methods for specifying coordinates), you can rotate polygon around center to desired angle.

How to build polygon on end points of one side (on side)

As in AutoCAD draw polygon on side (algorithm):

Call Polygon command in AutoCAD. At command prompt appears:

Number of parties <5 - previous value>:

We agree with default value, i.e. 5 sides of polygon AutoCAD. Press "Enter". system will display query:

Specify center of polygon or [Side]:

Select "Side" option to start building polygon on one side in AutoCAD. following query appears:

First end point side:

We indicate first end point of side of AutoCAD polygon with mouse click. Its preview is displayed, which is attached to line that runs from given first end point of side to second end point. query will appear:

Second end point side:

You can specify second end point of side of polygon in AutoCAD by clicking mouse or entering coordinates in command line. Point point by clicking it.

A regular pentagon (polygon) in AutoCAD of arbitrary sizes on side is constructed.
